Airplanes have their life stories, too. Accidentally I found out a forgotten but interesting one. Two same aircraft, almost twins, completed in a few weeks, started to fly in the one year for the one airline. One of these aircraft has became a series star, the second one crashed after about half year of service. If these airplanes were people, probably the series star would remember in interviews her sister who died as a young girl and people would write books and make movies about them. But the airplanes can not talk. So they had to wait until someone like me discovers all this...

I love the LOST series and I am interested in airplanes. So some time ago, I found out that the airplane that "acts" the Lost Oceanic 815 flight was a Lockheed L1011 TriStar.
A few weeks ago, I wrote for my employer an article about air disaster that happened in 1972 in Florida. The pilots were replacing a bulb and they forgot to watch the cockpit devices. Unfortunately, they also unconciously turned off the autopilot and the aircraft descended slowly. It crashed into Everglades swamp. The destroyed airplane was a Lockheed TriStar, too. "What a coincidence", I thought. But then I found out some interesting facts...
The "Lost airplane" was made in 1972 and it belonged to Eastern Airlines. It had a registration number N308EA. The "Everglades airplane" was also made in 1972, belonged to Eastern Airlines... and its registration number was N310EA. Almost the same numbers.
I started to be really interested and I tried to find out some more information. The Internet is a great source and if you know what are you looking for, you can get almost everything.
First Flight | Delivered to airlines | |
N308EA (Lost airplane) | 12/06/1972 | 30/06/1972 |
N309EA (anonymous) | 10/07/1972 | 25/07/1972 |
N310EA (Everglades airpl.) | 30/07/1972 | 18/08/1972 |
The airplanes were sisters (according to my theory that the civil airplanes are girls :o)
What a pathetic story: Two sisters, members of one big family, who had to start working when they finished their childhood. The younger sister finished her life tragically after a half year of service. Let's calculate: this kind of aircraft "lives" and works about 25-30 years, people can work maybe 50-60 years... this means that a half year of airplane is like one year of a man. When the airplane is delivered to the airlines, its childhood is gone, so it is maybe like a 15,16-year-old teenager... This means that the "Everglades airplane" "died" in her 17, maybe 18. What a sad story of a young beautiful airplane girl...
Her elder sister was working hard all the life and then she went into retirement. And some years after, the producers of Lost series chose her to be an actor. The old aircraft lady has became a series star, in her old age. Almost an unbelievable life story, isn't it?
The Protecting Ghosts
The crashed "Everglades Airplane" was not completely destroyed during the crash. Some parts were reused as replacement parts. The early-dead airplane girl was in a perfect condition, except her fatal injuries... so she became an organ donor.
There are many legends about the replacement parts from this aircraft. It is said that in airplanes what got these replacement parts, there were seen the ghosts of cockpit crew who destroyed the airplane and died during the Everglades crash. It was said that the ghosts protect another TriStars from accidents.
The fliers are superstitious people, so the stories spreaded quickly. Finally, the company decided to remove the problematic replacement parts to stop the stories. No more ghosts were seen after this, it is said.
So, it crossed my mind that both airplane sisters could have such a bond after the tragedy of the "younger sister". According to this discussion, they had. The "Lost airplane" had allegedly some replacement parts from her "Everglades sister". Who knows, what happened on its board and who was spotted there...
The old airplane lady, who now is lying somwhere on the Hawaii beach, had really an interesting life.
4... 8... 15... 16... 23... 42
But then I discovered the last coincidence, that really shocked me. If you don't know the Lost series, then you don't know the numbers above. Or maybe The Numbers - we, whose lifes were connected to the series, we can tell you them when you wake us in the middle of the night. Nobody knows what exactly the numbers mean, but they were really very, very important. And cursed, too.
I realized that the crashed airplane, the "younger sister", crashed in the night - exactly at 23:42. You can't believe it? It is written in the NTSB Final Report, page 6, section 16.
Unbelievable, isn't it?
By the way, some weeks before I wrote an article about another air crash. An aircraft took off at 23:42. It crashed. What a stupid coincidence... And then, many years after, a TV channell decides to make a series where so many airplanes are crashing and everything is connected to these numbers. Maybe I can imagine that the producers noticed the same coincidence as I did... and they were inspired by the numbers.
It is certainly better than to believe that the Numbers are really cursed. No, don't be afraid, I'm not such a Lost fanatic... :o)
But I am really surprised and perplexed by all the coincidences.
And, all things considered, although both aircraft stories couldn't be more different, they are weirdly similar in some way. The "Everglades airplane" crash was the first bad TriStar crash. The pilots were informed about things that they had to pay attention. The "crashed little sister" helped to protect her sister airplanes at least in this way - if you don't want to believe in ghosts of cabin crew who protected the sisters of the airplane that they destroyed.
In Lost, the "series star" N308EA was acting an aircraft that crashes to get special people into a special place that they should protect - and protect all the world, too. The Oceanic 815 in Lost is sacrificed to protect anyone else. In fact, the "elder sister", with her role, remembered the tragedy of her "little sister".
Do you still think that only people have touching, moving life stories?
PS: I wonder what life had the middle sister, anonymous airplane with registration number N309EA. Maybe one day, I'll try to get some more information...
